Towards the gradual integration of women in the tech world
At the start of 2021, a study conducted by Michael Page Technology, in partnership with Choose Your Boss, revealed the percentage of tech positions held by women. According to this survey of some 1,000 IT companies, women account for a total of 20% of IT staff. A percentage that only serves to highlight the gender imbalance that reigns in this field.
Another statistic that testifies to the gradual feminization of the tech professions: the percentage of experienced IT women continues to rise. Today, over 20% of female IT professionals have almost 3 years' experience, compared with 9% of men. What's more, 13% of women have between 4 and 7 years' professional experience in IT, compared with 10% of men.
In short, the clichés and prejudices associated with technical professions are tending to disappear, and we are gradually witnessing the feminization and democratization of the data professions.
Women who prioritize job security
Michael Page Technology's "IT employment and new recruitment challenges" study has revealed another facet of the current situation for women in tech. Few of them are attracted by the self-employed or freelance status. Over 64% prefer salaried status, to take advantage of the security it offers. Among women over 35, this percentage rises to 73%.
Other statistics further reinforce the importance placed by women on job security. Indeed, where men are attracted by the interest of assignments, women employed by ESNs insist on opportunities to develop their skills with a view to maintaining their employability. In the same vein, almost 31% of women in IT aged between 35 and 54 say they prefer working for large groups and ETIs.
What about the pay gap between men and women?
It should be noted that a balance in the remuneration received by both genders can be predicted within the next 5 years. To achieve this, we are counting on women moving into better-paid positions.
Some of the difficulties encountered when looking for a job
While women in data are beginning to occupy an increasingly important place in IT companies, the job search is still proving difficult for some of them. Indeed, despite the fact that the data and IT market remains dynamic, the majority of female developers and IT professionals under the age of 35 find that the health crisis has made the market less favorable.
In support of this assertion, almost 50% of female IT experts seeking employment today have no leads deemed reliable, compared to around 32% of male experts. Differences in the criteria used to evaluate these leads are one possible explanation. But it's also worth noting that companies' needs in terms of IT and data expertise continue to evolve at high speed. Yet still too few female candidates have the reflex to embark on training and self-training courses with a view to upgrading their skills. Among women, in particular, only 50% undertake training to acquire new skills. However, there are certain profiles that stand out by attending professional training courses. These profiles are IT women under 35 (68%), women in infrastructure professions (62%) and female developers (65%).
